MADISON, Wis. -
Saint Louis University women's soccer scored a 2-0 victory over Davidson College in the opening game of the Rocky Rococo Classic, hosted by University of Wisconsin. The Billikens (4-1-0) tallied both goals in the second half with senior midfielder Erin Schwetye picking up the game winner in the 64th minute on a pass from senior Jenny Kehl. Senior goalkeeper Meghann Burke collected her third shutout of the season.
Outshooting the Wildcats 8-1 in the second half alone, Saint Louis possessed the ball and attacked throughout the game. After forcing Davidson keeper Sarah Hobart into six saves on the first six shots, the Bills finally found the back of the net. Schwetye was instrumental in the beginning of the play as she worked the ball through the midfield, then ran the sideline where junior Carrie Carlson fed her wide. The senior midfielder looked the serve the ball across. Kehl collected it and was forced to serve it back out to Schwetye who then drove the ball from 15 yards out into the opposite corner.
Insurance came in the 80th minute on a set play. After Schwetye was fouled on the right side, sophomore Tressa Pecher served the ball to the far post where freshman Christie Cigno headed it past Hobart to the other side.
The Billikens controlled the ball throughout the first half, beating the Wildcats to a variety of 50-50 balls. The SLU midfield worked to strip Wildcat defenders as well as the Bills continually advanced toward the goal. SLU forced Davidson keeper Sarah Hobart in four saves and induced four corners in the first half.
The offensive action began early with Jenny Kehl working the ball along the endline and feeding Christie Cigno on the far post, which led to Hobart's first save in the seventh minute. The most dangerous attack came in the 14th minute as Jamie Perry eluded defenders in the midfield and sent a through ball ahead for Kehl. The Billiken midfielder got the ball a fraction of a second before Hobart, who collected her second save.
Davidson's chance came in the 22nd minute on a deadball just outside the box on the left side. Tara Maloney served it across for Deneille Erikson who one-touched it, but Meghann Burke came up with the only save she needed in the half.
The Billikens return to action on Sun., Sept. 15, against No. 12 Connecticut in the second day of the Rocky Rococo Classic
