No. 12 UConn Tops Billikens 2-0

Sept. 15, 2002

Final Stats

MADISON, Wis. - Saint Louis University women's soccer dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 12 Connecticut this afternoon in the Rocky Rococo Classic. The Billikens maintained good pressure in the second half, but could not overcome the two-goal deficit at halftime.

Saint Louis was aggressive early, earning a corner kick in the opening minutes, then defending a UConn deadball 25 yards outside the box in the fifth minute. Still, it was the Huskies that struck first in the game's seventh minute when Salla Ranta served a ball to the middle of the box from the right side. When the ball was deflected wide by a defender, it landed at the feet of Jennifer Sullivan who arced a shot to the upper right corner over the leaping Billiken keeper.

UConn struck again in the 23rd minute when Sullivan served a ball across the top of the box to Kristen Graczyk with just one defender to beat. A spin move put her in alone on Burke essentially on a PK. The Huskies' forward squeaked the ball under Burke's left side.

Saint Louis built a handful good chances in the second half, beginning with Christie Cigno's run in the 50th minute after a long serve from Kelly Ferguson. UConn keeper Maria Yatrakis was able to smother the ball just as Cigno met it, however. Ferguson had her own chance less than a minute later when her shot launched from 30 yards out sailed just over the crossbar. Cigno drew a foul just at the top of the box in the 64th minute and the resulting deadball again sailed just over the goal.

The Billikens wrap up their four-game road swing with a pair of Conference USA games next weekend. Saint Louis travels to Memphis on Fri., Sept. 20, at 7 p.m., then goes on to face UAB on Sun., Sept. 22, at 1 p.m.
