Indiana Strikes Late to Beat Billikens, 2-1

Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana leading scorer Ned Grabavoy scored twice to lead the 24th-ranked Hoosiers past fifth-ranked Saint Louis 2-1 tonight in a non-conference men's soccer match at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers stretched their winning streak to six as the Billikens lost their second-straight match.

Indiana had the better of the opportunities in the first half with quick counters, and Hoosiers leading scorer Grabavoy put IU on top in the 30th minute. On another counter attack, sophomore midfielder Jordan Chirico broke down the right flank and sent a pass to the far post. Grabavoy slid in for the deflection.

The Billikens' best chance came in the 33rd minute as freshman midfielder John DiRaimondo sent a cross from deep off the right flank. The cross skimmed across the top of the cross bar and remained in play, but SLU couldn't convert it into a shot. The Hoosiers out-shot the Bills 6-2 in the first half and had a 4-1 advantage on corners.

Saint Louis came out stronger in the second half as DiRaimondo led the charge. IU keeper Jay Nolly came up with DiRaimondo's 16-yard shot in the 66th minute. Billiken leading scorer Vedad Ibisevic, who left the first half 15 minutes in because of injury, returned and became a factor. Ibisevic's backheel found Ryan Wileman in the Hoosiers' area, but Wileman was dragged down before getting a shot away. In the 64th minute, DiRaimondo's dangerous 22-yard free kick from straight away deflected off the IU wall.

Billiken keeper Martin Hutton made the save of the day on a reaction save of Grabavoy's point-blank shot in 66th minute. The Billikens tied the match shortly thereafter on Wileman's header off DiRaimondo's free kick. Hutton came up with another sparkling, leaping save in the 71st minute to keep the match tied.

IU's Nolly made his save of the day punching out a SLU serve that Ibisevic had measured in the 77th minute. Hutton countered with a diving save on Hoosier midfielder Brian Plotkin's 25-yard drive that came after two SLU defenders slipped. Hutton managed to get a piece, and the shot hit the right goal post.

Grabavoy netted the winner at 85:13. Plotkin was at the left post to collect a long serve and knocked it back across the goalmouth where Grabavoy was on the doorstep.

Indiana (8-3-4) out-shot the Billikens 12-6 although SLU had a 6-4 edge on corners. IU's Nolly made three, while SLU's Hutton recorded four saves.

Saint Louis (9-3-2 overall) returns to Conference USA action on Wed., Oct. 29, when Memphis visits Robert R. Hermann Stadium for an 8 p.m. start.
