DAYTON, Ohio - Saint Louis turned in a superlative defensive effort to knock off Dayton 60-49 tonight in a men's non-conference basketball game at before 12,353 fans at UD Arena. Chris Sloan's 18 points and Tom Frericks' 10 rebounds helped SLU post its first road win of the year.
"We did a tremendous job of executing our game plan tonight," Billikens head coach Brad Soderberg. "In particular, Josh Fisher used his senior experience to go over or under screens and his judgment on when to double down. We were determined that they were going to have to beat us from the three-point line, and it didn't happen for them until late in the game."
After UD senior forward Keith Waleskowski scored his first bucket of the night with 10:36 to play, the Flyers led 29-25. The Billikens then went on a 14-0 run to grab a 39-29 lead with 5:04 remaining. The Bills took the lead for good on Sloan's triple from the left side, and Fisher capped the rally with a driving lay-up from the left side.
Junior forward Izik Ohanon pumped the lead to 46-31 with a driving shot through the lane, and the Bills withstood a shower of late UD threes to put the game away. The Flyers did get back within 50-42 with 1:22 remaining, but couldn't get any closer. SLU shot 14-of-18 from the free throw line in the final 3:30.
In a grinding first half, Dayton slugged its way to a 15-9 lead with 8:40 remaining on senior point guard Ramod Marshall's bucket. After the Billikens went nearly five minutes without a point, SLU responded by holding UD scoreless for nearly seven minutes. In the interim, Sloan scored six points to rally SLU to a 16-15 lead. After UD freshman forward Marques Bennett scored off a steal, Bills senior forward Ross Varner responded with a triple. The Flyers' Marshall scored on a running hook to end the half.
The Bills out-shot the Flyers 33 percent to 30.8 percent from the field in the first half as UD was 1-of-11 from beyond the arc. Both coaches ended up with technical fouls as their clubs struggled offensively.
Marshall led Dayton (10-2) with 12 points, and freshman Monty Scott pumped in 11 late points. UD shot only 32.8 percent from the field and 20.7 percent from three. UD leading scorer Sean Finn, who averages 16 points per game, was held to six. Waleskowski, who averages 13 ppg, finished with three.
