Final Stats
St. Louis -
Saint Louis scored three times in the first 10 minutes this afternoon as the Billikens romped past Arkansas State 6-0 in the season opener for both teams at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Billiken junior forward Jamie Perry scored twice, while Courtney Hulcer and Dee Guempel each assisted on two goals.
Freshman forward Anna Schuch put the Billikens on top at 2:49 on the first shot of her career with an assist from fellow freshman Hulcer. After a long run up the right flank, Hulcer shot, collected her own rebound and sent a serve to the left post. Schuch was at the ready to send home a four-yard header.
Perry made it a two-goal margin at 5:30 on a breakaway off a long through ball from sweeper Anny Lucier. Perry cut to her right and tucked a 10-yard shot behind ASU keeper Adrienne Mann.
Sophomore midfielder Kelly Ferguson capped the first half scoring at 9:51 off a set piece. Hulcer's serve from near the right corner flag found Ferguson unmarked in the middle of the Indians' penalty area. Ferguson's eight-yard header slipped in under the cross bar.
Perry notched her second goal of the game in the 66th minute. After some good work by Guempel down the left wing, Perry drilled a 12-yard strike.
Hulcer danced between two ASU defenders outside the Indians' penalty area and was dragged down inside the ASU area causing a penalty kick in the 70th minute. Sophomore midfielder Christie Cigno rammed the PK off the left goal post. Cigno atoned for that error with a four-yard header off a restart at 73:24. Guempel collected her second assist of the day with an accurate serve that found Cigno alone at the left post.
Sophomore midfielder Trisha Neidenbach closed the scoring with her first career goal in the 77th minute. Niedenbach corralled an errant ASU goal kick and hammered a 30-yard strike off the cross bar that caromed straight down on the goal line.
The Billikens set a Hermann Stadium record with 39 shots, while ASU (0-1-0) managed just three. The Bills had a 7-1 edge on corner kicks. SLU's Amanda Martin played the first half in goal, while Lyndsay Gensler made both of the Bills' saves the second half to complete the shutout. ASU keeper Adrienne Mann made 15 saves.
