Billikens Fall to ISU, 2-1

Aug. 31, 2004

Final Stats

NORMAL, Ill. - Saint Louis University women's soccer dropped a 2-1 decision at Illinois State this afternoon as the Redbirds scored on a pair of corners. The Billikens out-shot ISU 19-8 and forced keeper Andrea Shaw into six saves, but could not put home the tying goal despite dominating possession through much of the game. SLU tied the game in the 63rd minute. Dee Guempel sent Jamie Perry long up the left side where she dribbled around a set of defenders to feed Maureen Hughes on the right side. Hughes played the ball toward the end line then came back toward the top of the box looking for an opening to bury her shot into the left side netting. The Redbirds took the lead on just their second shot of the half. Michelle Brumbaugh served a corner to the left side where SLU goalkeeper Amanda Martin came out to punch the ball clear. Joyce Kleinheinz was able to collect the rebound and send a shot toward the goal where it deflected off a defender and past Martin in the 73rd minute. The Billikens again took over the momentum as they looked for the tying strike. Guempel's shot was tipped just over the cross bar, and Kelly Ferguson shot at the near post required a team save as ISU goalkeeper Andrea Shaw was caught out of position. Despite the Billikens dominating play early in the first half, the Redbirds got on the board first in the 26th minute. Michelle Brumbaugh served a corner from the right side to the left corner of the box where Heather Forsyth headed it into the upper right corner of the goal. The Billikens' best opportunity to knot the score before the half came in the waning moments of the period. Ferguson sent a long ball from the midfield to the goal box where MaKensie Johnson was charging at the ISU keeper. As the ball continued its arc, Shaw was able to corral it just before Johnson. The Billikens continue their four-game road stretch at the Kansas Invitational, facing Mississippi State on Fri., Sept. 3, at 2:30 p.m.
