St. Louis - Saint Louis snapped a two-game losing streak by slipping past Michigan 2-1 tonight in a non-conference men's soccer match before 4,398 fans at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Senior defender Danny Wynn netted the winner in the 82nd minute.
"That's the kind of effort that we need to carry us through the rest of the season," Billikens head coach Dan Donigan said. "Alex Matteson and Eric Sweetin were outstanding in the central midfield tonight, and we were aggressive from the opening kickoff. It was definitely a step in the right direction."
Billiken freshman forward Dado Hamzagic put SLU on top in the 15th minute as the Bills completed a nifty counterattack. Junior midfielder Kyle Patterson at the left side of the Michigan penalty area. Patterson sent a header back to the near post where Hamzagic put a six-yard header in the back of the net.
Keeper Peter Dzubay was sharp the rest of the half to keep Michigan close as the Bills out-shot the Wolverines 6-2. Dzubay made a diving save to his right in the 39th minute to deny SLU freshman Danny Wynn throw-in. Dzubay also denied John DiRaimondo on a 20-yard free kick to the left post in the 43rd minute.
Although Saint Louis continued to dictate the tempo of the match, Michigan tied the match in the 77th minute when senior midfielder Adam Bruh stuck a 28-yard free kick into the upper right corner. SLU keeper Jeff Sackman got his hand on the shot, but couldn't knock it away.
Wynn quickly answered on a 35-yard free kick. Wynn's drive hit the Michigan wall and changed direction on the Wolverine's Dzubay, who was diving to the left post. Dzubay got his hand on it, but the ball's momentum carried it over the goal line.
