St. Louis - Saint Louis junior midfielder John DiRaimondo scored twice as the Billikens topped Temple 2-1 tonight in the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both sides at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. DiRaimondo's goal in the 78th minute was the winner
"It's a learning process for us, because we have to understand that everyone loves to play here and get a positive result," Billikens head coach Dan Donigan said. "So, we take everyone's best shot. That's the best two-win team we've seen, because they battle and they're well-coaches."
Even though the Billikens dominated the early stages of the first half, Temple jumped on top in the 27th minute. On a counter attack, Owls forward Tony Donatelli found midfielder Ryan Heins unmarked on the left flank. Heins beat SLU keeper Jeff Sackman to the right post from 15 yards.
DiRaimondo tied the match in the 29th minute on a penalty kick after the Owls were whistled for a handball in the penalty area. The Billikens weathered a strong Temple attack in the latter stages of the half as Sackman dived to his left to stop Matt Maher's 20-yard blast and smothered the rebound. On a Temple corner with two minutes remaining, Owls defender James Suevo's header was cleared off the SLU's line by DiRaimondo.
Temple also had the best of the play early in the second half, but the Billikens held off the Owls. SLU slowly took control and didn't allow a Temple shot in the final 25 minutes. DiRaimondo buried the winner from 12 yards to the right of the Owls' goal. Freshman midfielder Chad Hagerty's serve from the left flank was flicked to the far side by freshman forward Dado Hamzagic, and DiRaimondo was free to convert.
Temple (2-8-0 overall, 0-1-0 A-10) out-shot the Bills 11-10, but SLU had a wide 9-4 edge in corners. SLU's Sackman made four stops, while Owls keeper Tony Pratico made five saves.
Saint Louis (4-4-1, 1-0-0) continues its six-game homestand at Hermann Stadium by entertaining Saint Joseph's on Sun., Oct 9, for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
