Charlotte - Saint Louis saw its winless streak stretch to three as the Billikens and Charlotte battled to a 1-1 overtime tie tonight in an Atlantic 10 Conference men's soccer match at Trans America Field. Sophomore midfielder Andrew Reeder scored for the Bills, while Charlotte's Floyd Franks netted the equalizer.
"It is frustrating right now, because we played well these past two games and came away with ties," Billikens head coach Dan Donigan said. "We had great chances and dominated the play, so we came away feeling good about the way we played. We can't dwell on it, because we need to move on to Sunday and win at Richmond."
Reeder gave SLU a first half lead at 30:38 on a header off senior midfielder Dan Guffey also picked up an assist on the play.
The 49ers tied the match in the 79th minute as Franks connected on a breakaway after a SLU defensive miscue. Charlotte leading scorer Adam Ruud put Franks in all alone against SLU keeper Jeff Sackman. Charlotte's Seibert kept the Bills at bay in the waning moments as he stopped DiRaimondo in the 87th minute, and then came up big on Bills midfielder Alex Matteson after the ensuing DiRaimondo corner kick. Matteson had another opportunity in the 88th minute but shot high.
Saint Louis had the better of the play in both overtime sessions as the Bills enjoyed a 5-0 edge in shots. Senior captain Ryan Wileman hit the post in the 95th minute, and the 49ers Seibert saved Wileman's second game-winning attempt in the 96th minute. DiRaimondo also shot high over an open net in the 98th minute. Seibert again was alert against SLU freshman Kyle Patterson in the 106th minute.
The Billikens out-shot Charlotte (5-7-4 overall, 2-2-4 A-10) 16-10 and had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Charlotte's Seibert made eight saves, while SLU's Sackman made six stops.
Saint Louis (8-5-3, 5-1-2) concludes the regular-season on Sunday at Richmond in a noon (CT) start. The Billikens host the A-10 Tournament beginning Thu., Nov. 10, at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
