No. 3 Duke Sprints Past Bills, 3-1

St. Louis - Third-ranked Duke stunned No. 25 Saint Louis with a goal in the opening minute and went on to 3-1 victory tonight in a non-conference men's soccer match before 3,526 fans at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Blue Devils midfielder Chris Loftus scored a goal and assisted on another as Duke won its second straight.

"Credit Duke for an excellent game, because they were quicker to the ball, stronger on the ball and just played better than we did," Billikens head coach Dan Donigan said. "Nevertheless, we did some good things to work our way back into the match, but just didn't connect on some chances."

Just 58 seconds into the match, Loftus hit a 15-yard volley from the foot of Danny Miller. With the Devils dominating possession, forward Spencer Wadsworth gave Duke a two-goal margin in the 23rd minute. Loftus broke in from 12 yards, but SLU senior keeper Jeff Sackman deflected the shot to the right post. Wadsworth won the race to the rebound and slid a four-yard shot inside the post.

Saint Louis survived a Duke flurry in the opening moments of the second half when Devils midfielder Michael Videora rang a shot off the right post. The Bills got on the board in the 58th minute as senior back Danny Wynn pounded a shot from 12 yards off the back of a Duke defender that went into the upper corner. Freshman midfielder Dado Hamzagic recorded the assist on the goal.

The game then shifted into a case of missed opportunities for SLU. The Bills appeared to tie the game in the 59th minute, when Hamzagic netted the ball on a breakaway off John DiRaimondo's through ball, but it was nullified by an offside call. Just over two minutes later, Duke took advantage of a SLU mistake at the right sideline that resulted in a Duke throw-in. Forward Mike Grella took a pass from Wadsworth, snaked past the Billiken backs and beat Sackman to the far corner.

Wynn had another opportunity in the 69th minute, but was turned away by Duke keeper Justin Papadakis. In the 72nd minute, freshman back Calum Angus hammered a 20-yard shot off the right post on a free kick. SLU junior midfielder Alex Matteson slid a ball across the mouth of the goal just missing the far post in the 77th minute. Hamzagic missed wide on a breakaway in the 82nd minute.

"We did some good things, but everything came down to ifs," Donigan. "If we don't give up a goal in the opening minute ... if we don't get out-worked on the back post ... if we handle the ball properly at the sideline ... if some players time some runs better. It's all about making plays, and we didn't make enough tonight."

Duke out-shot the Bills 15-9 and had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. SLU's Sackman made five saves, while Duke's Papadakis recorded two stops.

Saint Louis (1-1-0) goes to Notre Dame's tournament next weekend to face No. 1 Indiana on Fri., Sept. 9, and the 16th-ranked Fighting Irish on Sun., Sept. 11.
