Philadelphia - Senior midfielder John DiRaimondo's first half goal and a staunch defense lifted No. 12 Saint Louis to a 1-0 victory over the host Saint Joseph's Hawks in Atlantic 10 Conference men's soccer matchup. Senior goalkeeper Ross Kaufman was tested only once in the Billikens' eighth shutout of the season. The victory stretches SLU's unbeaten streak to seven matches.
"We are pleased with another win in conference play, but we need to be critical of ourselves as we continue to find areas in which we need to improve," Billiken head coach Dan Donigan said. "We generated plenty of chances, we just need to do a better job of finishing."
DiRaimondo, who returned to the starting lineup after sitting out the previous three matches with an injury, scored the only goal Saint Louis (9-3-2, 5-0-1 A-10) would need in the 29th minute. Senior defender Mo Benne served a ball off a free kick from the left flank that was tracked by DiRaimondo. The Hermann Trophy candidate headed the pass just inside the far post for his team-leading fourth tally of the season. Benne earned his first point of the season on the assist.
Meanwhile, the Billiken back line held St. Joe's (1-11-3, 0-5-1 A-10) in check during the first session. The Hawks were unable to break through offensively as the Billikens out-shot SJU 8-0 and held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks in the first session.
In the second half, the Hawk offense began penetrate the Billiken defense as forwards Dean Niedosik and Jason Lewis took a combined four shots in the stanza. Lewis sent a header just wide of the net late in the half, providing the Hawks with their best opportunity at an equalizer.
Saint Louis, far from satisfied with only a one-goal lead, continued its offensive pressure in the second half but was unable to get the ball past SJU keeper Bryan Benedict, who made six saves overall in the contest. Sophomore midfielder Dado Hamzagic fired a game-high five shots, while freshman midfielder Tim Ream added five shots.
Overall, the Billikens tallied a season-high 21 shots and posted another season-high with 11 corner kicks. The Hawks mustered only five shots and were awarded two corner kicks in the contest.
The Billikens continue stay in Philadelphia to face Temple on Sun., Oct. 22, in a noon (CT) contest.
