Box Score

ST. LOUIS - Freshman midfielder Alyssa Mautz (O'Fallon, Mo. / Ft. Zumwalt West) scored two goals and assisted on another as Saint Louis cruised to a 3-1 victory over Southeast Missouri in the 10th annual Toys for Tots Tournament at Robert R. Hermann Stadium Friday night. With the victory, the Billikens even their record at 2-2-0, while SEMO dips to 2-2-1.

Mautz tallied the first goal of her career following a great individual effort from Kelly Waeckerle. On the left endline, Waeckerle put an off-angle shot on goal that SEMO keeper Lindsay Pickering got her gloves on. The ball bounced to an alert Mautz, who pounced on the rebound and buried in into the back of the goal for the game's first tally.

Just two-and-a-half minutes later, Mautz gave the Billikens a two-goal advantage after capitalizing on a SEMO defensive miscue. Two Redhawk defenders muffed a clearance in open space, and Mautz rocketed the loose ball in the upper portion of the net for her second-career goal.

The Redhawks answered with a goal of their own in the 73rd minute. Courtney Alexander dribbled on the left side, and created a look from eight yard out. Her shot nicked the inside of the near post and was redirected into the far side netting to cut the Billikens' lead in half.

Maggie Farrell put the Billikens' up by two with a goal three minutes later. From the right flank, Mautz sent a perfectly flighted ball into the box, and Farrell one-timed the serve past Pickering for a 3-1 Billiken advantage.

The second-half scoring barrage came after a scoreless first half despite several golden opportunities by the Billikens. Waeckerle had the first legitimate scoring chance, but a heads-up play by a SEMO's Megan McGrath negated the play. Waeckerle danced through the box, juked past the keeper, and put a ball toward the open net from seven yards out. However, McGrath slid parallel to the goal line and cleared the ball out of harms' way.

Later in the half, Waeckerle whistled a shot from 30 yards that bounced off the bottom half of the crossbar and caromed down and away from the goal line. Mautz had a chance after fancy passing from Waeckerle and Julia Bradenberg, but her shot was blocked.

The Billikens out-shot SEMO 18-6 and held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. SLU keeper Hannah Koesterer made two saves, while Pickering stopped seven for the Redhawks.

SLU returns to action on Sunday when they host Army in a 1 p.m. contest. Earlier on Friday, Army and Air Force played to a scoreless draw in the opening game of the Toys for Tots Tournament.
