ST. LOUIS - Mary Green scored on a penalty kick with 2:01 left in double overtime to give Saint Louis a 1-0 victory over Army to close out the 10th annual Toys for Tots Tournament at Robert R. Hermann Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The win gave the Billikens the tournament title with a 2-0-0 record as SLU improves to 3-2-0 overall. Army falls to 1-3-1 this season.
Late in the second overtime period, Liz Fox flighted a long ball to Kelly Waeckerle, who was pulled down in the box to draw a penalty kick. Green took the PK for the Billikens and tucked her shot into the left side for the winner.
Susan Fredrickson had the first good scoring chance for the Billikens 15 minutes into the game on a dead ball restart from 20 yards out, but Army keeper Alex Lostetter came up with the save. The Billikens controlled play for most of the half but were unable to dent the Army goal. The Billikens took seven shots in the first half, and Lostetter made four saves.
In the early going of the second half, Alyssa Mautz collected a long pass from Fredrickson and launched a shot that beat the Army keeper but bounced off the right post. The Billikens continued to carry the play in the second half but were unable to connect on any of their nine shots in the stanza.
Five minutes into the first overtime period, Lauren Bozesky took a shot that dipped at the last moment to create some difficulty for Army's Lostetter as the ball slipped out of her grip but stayed outside the goal.
The Billikens out-shot Army 20-5, but Black Knight goalie Lostetter made 10 saves. Billiken keeper Hannah Koesterer only had to make one save to earn the shutout.
Green was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Fox, Mautz and Fredrickson were the other Billikens named to the All-Tournament team.
The Billikens take to the road for their next game when they travel to Lincoln, Neb., to face Nebraska on Fri., Sept. 21.
