Oct. 12, 2008

Box Score

ST. LOUIS - Junior Kelly Waeckerle (St. Louis/Parkway West) and senior Lauren Olson (Plano, Texas/Ursuline) scored a goal apiece, and the Saint Louis defense did the rest in a 2-0 Atlantic 10 Conference triumph over Temple Sunday afternoon at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.

The victory snapped a three-game winless streak for the Billikens, who improved to 6-3-4 overall and 2-2-1 in A-10 action as they get set to play four of their final six games away from home. Temple slipped to 2-8-3, 0-3-2.

Waeckerle gave SLU the only goal it would need at the 16:08 mark. Junior Sally Sinclair (St. Louis/Cor Jesu) lofted a long pass from the midfield toward the goal, and Waeckerle waited patiently to remain onside. She then controlled the ball and tapped it past Temple keeper Kara Williams from seven yards away. The goal was the junior striker's second of the season and her sixth career game-winner, tying her for seventh on the Billikens' all-time list. Sinclair picked up her first assist of the year.

Olson gave the Bills a cushion with her third goal of the season, tying her for the team lead, at 56:34. Junior Kristen Sapienza (St. Louis/St. Joseph's), who tallied her third assist of the year, sent a well-struck corner kick from the right side into the box. Olson headed the ball inside the left post from six yards out for a 2-0 Saint Louis advantage.

SLU dominated play in the first half, posting an 8-1 advantage in shots en route to a 12-5 edge for the game. Waeckerle tallied six of those 12 shots. Freshman Hannah Perry (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) had to make just one save to register her sixth shutout of the season, while Williams collected two saves. The Billikens earned a 6-1 margin in corner kicks.

Saint Louis is on the road for its next two contests. The Bills face George Washington Friday at 2 p.m. (CT) before taking on Richmond Sunday at 11 a.m. (CT).
