WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Junior Kelly Waeckerle (St. Louis/Parkway West) tallied her third and fourth goals of the season in the second half to lift Saint Louis to a 2-0 Atlantic 10 Conference victory over George Washington Friday afternoon.
Waeckerle, who scored twice in a game for the third time in her career and first time since her freshman season, took over the team lead in goals and points (nine). She now has seven game-winning goals for her career, good for seventh place on SLU's all-time list.
Saint Louis (7-3-4, 3-2-1 A-10), which posted its seventh shutout of the year and second in succession, dominated the first half despite not finding the back of the net. The Bills registered a 7-1 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks, but the first 45 minutes ended scoreless.
It wasn't until the 72nd minute that SLU broke the deadlock. Waeckerle had an attempt blocked, then regained control seconds later and drilled a 15-yard left-footed shot past GW keeper Lindsey Rowe at the 71:31 mark.
The Billikens all but put the game away less than four minutes later. Sophomore Ashley Brazill (St. Charles, Mo./Incarnate Word) sent a pass down the center of the field that was corralled by Waeckerle, who drilled the ball past a charging Rowe at 75:14 for a 2-0 Saint Louis cushion.
George Washington (7-8-0, 3-4-0) put three shots on goal in the final nine minutes, but freshman keeper Hannah Perry (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) stopped two of them and a third resulted in a team save. Perry, who has played every minute in goal this season, finished with three saves and took over sole possession of second place on the Billiken freshman list with her seventh shutout. SLU earned a 12-8 margin in total shots and a 5-3 advantage in corners.
The Billikens resume A-10 action Sunday at Richmond. Game time is 11 a.m. (CT).
