ST. LOUIS -
Junior Julia Bradenberg (St. Louis/Ursuline) tallied her second consecutive game-winning goal Friday night to give Saint Louis a 1-0 Atlantic 10 Conference triumph over Xavier at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
The victory extended SLU's winning streak to four games, all shutouts, and its unbeaten streak to five. The Billikens (9-3-4, 5-2-1) moved into a third-place tie in the A-10 with Dayton, which visits Hermann Stadium Sunday for a 1 p.m. kickoff. The shutout was the Bills' ninth of the season.
Junior Kelly Waeckerle (St. Louis/Parkway West) collected her second assist of the season on Bradenberg's goal. Moving in on the left flank, Waeckerle fed the ball to Bradenberg, who was able to get a foot on it just ahead of Xavier goalkeeper Kelly Farrell. The straight-on shot from six yards away found the mark for Bradenberg's team-leading fifth goal of the year, and the Bills had a 1-0 lead at the 48:35 mark.
Bradenberg took sole possession of seventh place on SLU's career game-winning goals list (eight). The junior striker is now ninth in career goals (18) and tied for ninth with current Billiken assistant coach Kelly Ferguson in career points (48) on the Saint Louis charts.
The Billikens had numerous first-half chances but could not find the back of the net despite out-shooting Xavier (1-13-2, 0-6-2) by a 10-3 count. Saint Louis finished with a 16-7 advantage in shots, including a game-high four by Waeckerle, and an 8-0 edge in corner kicks. Freshman keeper Hannah Perry (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) was not forced to make a save, while Farrell recorded five stops.
Sunday's game against Dayton is the Bills' final regular-season home contest of 2008. SLU's five seniors will be honored prior to kickoff. Saint Louis will host the Atlantic 10 Championship at Hermann Stadium Thursday through Sunday, Nov. 6-9.
