ST. LOUIS -
Butler broke a scoreless deadlock with a goal in the 67th minute, then added an insurance tally in the 80th minute to secure a 2-0 victory over Saint Louis Friday night at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
Butler (3-3) controlled the early play, earning four corner kicks in the first 12 minutes, but the Billikens turned away every Bulldog opportunity. SLU freshman keeper Hannah Perry stopped two first-half Butler shots on goal, including one on a breakaway in the 37th minute, and the period ended 0-0.
The Bulldogs scored what proved to be the game-winner at the 66:09 mark. Molly Kruger took a crossing pass from a sliding Lindsey Fox and found the back of the net for her second goal of the season and a 1-0 Butler lead.
The visitors doubled their advantage at 79:46. After Perry rejected a shot by Kruger, Carrie Twyman collected the rebound and found Kenzie Kokta in front of the net. Kokta angled a shot inside the far post for her first marker of the year, and it was 2-0 Butler.
Perry and Butler keeper Laura Baker finished with three saves apiece. The Bulldogs emerged with a 12-9 advantage in total shots. Junior midfielder Ashley Hayes led the Bills' offensive attack with three shots, including two on goal.
Saint Louis (3-1-1) will try to get back on track Sunday when it hosts Vanderbilt (5-1), which dropped a 3-0 decision at Missouri Friday night. Game time at Hermann Stadium is 1 p.m.
