Olson's Penalty Kick Gives Bills 2-1 Win

Sept. 19, 2008

Box Score

TOLEDO, Ohio - Senior back Lauren Olson (Plano, Texas/Ursuline) converted a penalty kick at the 79:07 mark to give Saint Louis a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Toledo Friday afternoon.

The goal, Olson's first as a Billiken, allowed Saint Louis (4-1-2) to snap a three-game winless skid. Toledo, which had won its last two outings, slipped to 4-2-0.

The Rockets grabbed an early lead when Tara Witt knocked in her second goal of the season at 17:56. Witt took a corner kick from Molly Cornwell and headed the ball past SLU freshman goalkeeper Hannah Perry (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North).

The Billikens scored the equalizer exactly five minutes later. Junior forward Julia Bradenberg (St. Louis/Ursuline), who earlier had put a shot on goal against Toledo keeper Angela Righeimer, took a cross from the right side of the box from junior forward Kelly Waeckerle (St. Louis/Parkway West). Righeimer was not up to the task this time, as Bradenberg notched her second goal of the season for a 1-1 deadlock.

Saint Louis maintained the momentum the remainder of the first half, out-shooting Toledo 3-0 prior to intermission. The Rockets came out aggressively in the second period, however, earning three early corner kicks that were part of their 10-2 advantage in that category.

Waeckerle and junior midfielder Ashley Hayes (St. Louis/Incarnate Word) fired shots on goal in the 64th minute and 68th minute, respectively. Toledo responded with back-to-back corners in the 72nd minute but could not generate a shot.

Following Olson's game-winner, Perry turned away a shot by Annie Sullivan in the 85th minute for her second and final save of the game, and the Billikens had their second win over the Rockets in as many tries.

Bradenberg finished with five shots, tying her career high, and Waeckerle added three to lead SLU to a 14-12 advantage. Righeimer made five saves for Toledo.

The Billikens travel to Evanston, Ill., Sunday to take on Northwestern. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
