Bills Turn Away Duquesne Challenge

Sept. 26, 2008

Box Score

ST. LOUIS - Senior Lauren Olson (Plano, Texas/Ursuline) converted a penalty kick in the 86th minute, and Saint Louis slipped by Duquesne 1-0 Friday night at Robert R. Hermann Stadium in the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both teams.

Olson's goal was the second of her career and her second game-winning PK in eight days. The first gave the Billikens (5-1-3, 1-0-0 A-10) a 2-1 triumph over Toledo last Friday.

Duquesne (2-3-2, 0-1-0), which controlled play in the second half to the tune of an 8-1 shot advantage, made a critical mistake that led to the game-winner. After the Dukes failed to clear the ball deep in their own end, junior Kelly Waeckerle (St. Louis/Parkway West) gained control, took the ball into the penalty area on the left side and was pulled down with 4:57 to play. Olson then rifled her PK attempt to the left of goalkeeper Gabby Morrin.

Saint Louis, which extended its unbeaten streak to four games, allowed Duquesne one early shot in the first half before shutting the door on the Dukes' offense. Meanwhile, the Billikens maintained a steady attack that gave them a 7-2 advantage in shots, although none of the attempts was on goal. Duquesne managed a shot on goal in the final minute of the half that was stopped by freshman Hannah Perry (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North).

Perry turned away four Duquesne shots on goal in the second stanza and finished with five saves. She improved her league-leading marks in shutouts (five), goals against average (0.62) and save percentage (.870).

"It was good to get a win in our first conference game," head coach Tim Champion said. "We're looking forward to our next game to see how we can improve and move forward."

That next game happens Sunday when the Billikens travel to Bronx, N.Y., to take on A-10 conference foe Fordham. Game time is noon (CT).
