ST. LOUIS -
Junior midfielder Ashley Hayes scored midway through the first half, and freshman goalkeeper Hannah Perry stopped 10 Nebraska shots on goal to lift Saint Louis women's soccer to a 1-0 victory Friday night at Robert R. Hermann Stadium in the 11th annual Toys For Tots Tournament.
Perry's 10 saves tied a Hermann Stadium record for a SLU goalkeeper. The Billikens improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2003 and exacted revenge for a 5-1 loss to Nebraska in Lincoln last season. The Cornhuskers slipped to 0-4.
Hayes' goal, her first this season, came at the 20:21 mark. Junior midfielder Susan Frederickson, moving down the left side, sent a long pass across field at a perfect angle, and Hayes banged it home inside the far post past Nebraska keeper Brittany Pfeil.
Perry made six of her saves in the second half, including back-to-back stops with just under six minutes left. She made a diving rejection off a restart at the 5:50 mark, then turned in another save seconds later. Perry also made an impressive point-blank save in the seventh minute.
The Billikens won despite being outshot 22-9 overall and 10-2 in shots on goal. Nebraska also earned a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks, but Perry and the SLU defense were up to the challenge.
The Bills host Missouri State Sunday at 1:30 p.m. That game is preceded by the Army-Southeast Missouri State match at 11 a.m.
