ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis used a 16-2 run at the start of the second half to seize control in a 69-55 nonconference win over Nebraska on Wednesday evening at Chaifetz Arena. The Billikens (2-0) shot 47.8 percent from the field in the second half and hit seven 3-pointers in the game to the Huskers' one to claim the win. The Huskers drop to 1-1 with the loss.
Femi John chipped in nine. Willie Reed neared a double-double with nine rebounds and seven points, while Kyle Cassity posted eight points and seven rebounds. Sek Henry collected a team-high 14 points for Nebraska, while Ryan Anderson had 10 points. Toney McCray added nine points and a team-best eight caroms.
The Billikens raced out to a 7-0 lead in the opening half, while holding the Huskers scoreless for over four minutes. Mitchell ignited the rally with a jumper from the right baseline just 17 seconds in. Then Cassity hit the front end of a one-and-one at 18:41 before Salecich nailed a shot from the right side to put SLU up 5-0. Cassity completed the spurt with a lay in off an offensive rebound at the 16:52 mark. Nebraska finally put its first points on the board with 15:45 left in the half when McCray knocked in a shot from the right.
McCray hit pull-up jumper from the right side at 15:05, cutting the margin to three. However, Saint Louis responded with a 5-0 burst that included a 3-point from Mitchell and a Justin Jordan buried a 3-pointer in the midst of an 8-3 flurry by the Huskers, which cut the margin to 19-16.
A Salecich 3-pointer at 9:28 increased the margin to five, but Nebraska's Henry nailed a pair of free throws and then knocked down a shot in the lane to make it 22-20. SLU scored the next four points to race out to a six-point lead. But it did not last long as the Huskers rallied for six points to knot the score at 26-26. John knocked down a jumper in the lane and Nebraska added a free throw to make it 28-27 SLU. The Bills were unable to get off a shot at the end of the half to increase the lead.
The Huskers shot 47.8 percent in the opening half and out-rebounded Saint Louis 19-14. The Billikens shot just 38.5 percent from the field, but hit 71.4 percent of their foul shots to hold on to the slim lead. Mitchell and Salecich paced SLU with five points apiece, while Cassity dished out three assists and Jon Smith added two blocks. Henry led all scorers with eight points, while McCray followed with seven points.
Nebraska grabbed a 29-28 lead out of the break on a reverse layup by Anderson. But the lead did not last long as the Billikens took control of the game on a 16-2 outburst, including 11 straight points, as the lead ballooned to 44-31 with 14:06 left. Salecich led SLU with two 3-pointers during the spurt, which also included five points from Mitchell and Cassity 3-pointer.
The Huskers cut the margin to single digits just twice before an 11-2 rally gave SLU its largest lead of the night. Brian Conklin hit a jumper in the lane to start the run and Mitchell completed a three-point play at the 8:21 mark. Nebraska's Lance Jeter knocked down a jumper at 8:01, but it was followed by two Jordan free throws and layups by Reed and Mitchell that put SLU in front by its largest margin of the evening, 58-41, with 4:17 left. The Billikens hit 11 free throws down the stretch to hold the Huskers at bay and pick up the 14-point victory.
