ST. LOUIS -
Hailee Elmore's come-from-behind victory at No. 1 singles and a narrow win by Joe Becker and Kasia Tomalak at No. 2 doubles were the key decisions for Saint Louis women's tennis in a 4-3 triumph over Drake Saturday at Sunset Tennis Center.
After being edged in the opening set, Elmore powered her way to a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Veronika Leszayova. Also in singles, Tomalak defeated Kari Sloboth 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5, and Sarah Septien was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Amanda Aragon at No. 6.
The three singles wins were enough to give Saint Louis (3-6) the match after the Billikens had captured the doubles point. Becker and Tomalak won a 9-7 nailbiter over Aragon and Gabriela Demos, while Elmore and Casey Miller registered an 8-4 victory over Leszayova and Sarah Plowman at No. 1.
"It was great to see Hailee break through in her singles match," head coach Jonathan Zych said. "She has several close losses against opponents on nationally ranked teams. Winning tonight, especially after being down a set, was important for her.
"This was a total team victory," Zych added. "Every player worked on being aggressive and went after the opponent. It was great to see them believe in themselves and attack."
The Billikens host Wright State Saturday, Feb. 28, at Sunset Tennis Center. Match time is 6:15 p.m.
