A sizeable advantage in shots was not enough for Saint Louis, as Army used an early goal in the second half to claim a 1-0 victory Friday night in front of a season-high 1,263 fans at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
Saint Louis (1-4-1) out-shot Army (3-2-1) 23-5, including 10-3 in shots on goal. Black Knights goalkeeper Alex Lostetter was up to the challenge, making five saves in each half. The Billikens were relentless in the second half as they tried to score the equalizer, launching 15 total shots in the final 45 minutes.
Seniors Ashley Hayes (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word), Kelly Waeckerle (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway West) and Susan Frederickson (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's) led the Billikens with a game-high four shots apiece. Waeckerle and Frederickson each fired three shots on net. Junior Ashley Brazill (St. Charles, Mo./Incarnate Word) put two of her three shots on goal, while senior Kristen Sapienza (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's) totaled three shots.
Christine O'Leary produced the game's only goal, her first of the season. From 35 yards straight away, O'Leary unleashed a shot that tucked under the upper right corner.
The Billikens are back in action at Hermann Stadium Sunday, hosting Air Force at 1 p.m.
