CANCUN - Saint Louis put four scores in double-figures as the Billikens rolled to a 71-49 triumph against Northeastern Wednesday in the opener of the 2010 Cancun Governor's Cup at Poliforum Benito Juarez.
The Billikens play Southern Miss tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. (CT). The Golden Eagles (8-1) topped East Tennessee State 64-60 in the second game of the tournament. Thursday's game will be televised on ESPNU, with Bob Picozzi and Miles Simon calling the action.
Freshman guard Jordair Jett led all scorers with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 at the line. It was the third-straight game that Jett led the Billikens in scoring.
Junior guard Paul Eckerle notched 11 points, which included two 3-pointers. Junior forward Brian Conklin and freshman forward Dwayne Evans chipped in 10 points apiece for the Billikens, who evened their record at 5-5 with the victory. Northeastern dipped to 2-6 with the loss.
The teams traded baskets early on, and the score was tied 15-15 with 5:56 remaining in the first half before a 7-2 spurt gave the Billikens a 22-17 lead at the break.
SLU came out hot in the second half and quickly pushed its lead to double digits. An 8-0 run, highlighted by freshman guard Mike McCall's trey, gave the Billikens a 32-19 advantage with 17:06 left and the Bills never looked back.
The Bills shot a sizzling 65.5 percent (19-29) from the field in the second half and ended up at 52 percent from the game. The SLU defense forced 17 Northeastern turnovers, which they turned into 25 points. Conversely, the Billikens committed 10 turnovers, including just two in the second half.
