ST. LOUIS - Though Saint Louis led by as many as 11 points in the second half, it took Kwamain Mitchell hitting a layup with 1.6 seconds remaining to spur Saint Louis to a 67-65 Atlantic 10 Conference victory over St. Bonaventure on Wednesday evening at Chaifetz Arena. The win snapped a two-game losing skid by the Billikens (13-8, 4-3 A-10), while the Bonnies fall to 9-11 overall, 2-5 in league tilts.
Mitchell extended his streak of double-digit scoring outings to 15 games with 17 points to go with three steals and three assists. Willie Reed finished with his sixth double-double of the season (11 rebounds, 11 points) along with four blocks. Jon Smith was the only other Billiken in double figures with 11 points. Five Bonnies posted double-figures scoring with Jonathan Hall and Andrew Nicholson each chipping in a team-best 13.
Both teams played frenetic defense in the opening half. Neither team managed a field goal until St. Bonaventure's Da'Quan Cook converted a traditional three-point play to put his team up 5-3 at the 16:55 mark. Brian Conklin tossed in SLU's next four points to help the Bills keep pace. But the Bonnies kept pace, tying the Bills three times before regaining the 13-11 advantage on consecutive buckets from Nicholson with 11:10 left in the half.
Cody Ellis knocked in a 3-pointer from the right side to put the Bills back in front by one before Kyle Cassity made a fastbreak layup to push SLU out to a 16-13 lead with 10:38 left. SBU chipped away at the lead as Cassity was the only Billiken to score over the ensuing four minutes. The Bonnies out-scored SLU 9-5 during that time to go up 22-21 with just under six minutes remaining in the first half.
Saint Louis' offense perked up after that and never trailed for the rest of the half. The Billikens got points from five different players to close the period on a 10-5 spurt to head into the locker room with a 31-27 lead at the break. Ogo Adegboye led all players with eight points, while Reed paced SLU with seven points and seven rebounds.
St. Bonaventure seized its largest lead of the game at 37-33 after out-scoring the Bills 10-2 immediately following the break. After scoring only a single point in the opening half, Mitchell found his scoring touch. Mitchell tossed in seven of SLU's points during a 10-2 charge to put Saint Louis back in front 42-39 with 11:57 left in the game.
The Billikens continued to push forward over the next five minutes earning their largest lead of the game. SLU was up 49-46 before it exploded for eight straight points to hustle out to a 57-46 lead. Mitchell scored the initial four points of the run, while Ellis and Reed each tallied during the stretch that put the Bills up by 11 with 6:41 to go.
A 14-7 run by the Bonnies narrowed the gap to 64-60 with 1:09 left in the game. Saint Louis missed three critical free throws down with less than 44 second remaining as SBU inched even closer. Hall sparked the Bonnies late with a pair of free throws at the 37.8 mark. He then tossed in a 3-pointer from the top of the key that knotted the score at 65-65 with 26.6 seconds left in the game. Saint Louis ran the clock down for the last shot as Mitchell worked the ball to the right side and knocked in a layup to give his team the two-point victory.
