LAWRENCE, Kan. -
Hailee Elmore remained undefeated at No. 1 singles and was joined by No. 2 Casey Miller in the win column, but Kansas rallied for victories at Nos. 3 and 4 singles and defeated the Billikens 5-2 Saturday.
Elmore improved to 12-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Ekaterina Morozova, while Miller downed Sara Lazarevic 7-5, 0-6, 7-5. The Jayhawks' Maria Martinez was a 2-6, 7-5, 3-0 (ret.) winner over Sarah Septien at No. 3, and Kunigunda Dorn edged Caitlin McKenna 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6.
Kansas (7-4) grabbed a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. Morozova and Wilbert topped Miller and Nalepa 8-5 at No. 1, while Lazarevic and Dorn were 8-3 winners over Hailee Elmore and Kasia Tomalak at No. 2. Septien and Mia Elmore crafted an 8-2 victory over Martinez and Khanevskaya at No. 3.
"It was exciting to see Hailee continue her streak," head coach Jonathan Zych said. "She controlled the match with her consistency against a good opponent. Sarah was close to winning in the second set before taking a fall and suffering an injury, and Jenny took her opponent to the limit. It was a tough match against a good team, and I feel good about our team even though we came out on the short end."
The Billikens (7-5) remain in Lawrence for an 11 a.m. Sunday match against Cleveland State.
