Billikens and No. 16 South Florida Play to Scoreless Draw

ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis played to a 0-0 draw against the 16th-ranked South Florida Bulls Saturday night at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.

The Billikens, who move to 0-1-1 on the season, welcome Oral Roberts to Hermann Stadium next Friday. Game time is set for 7 p.m., following a pregame ceremony where the Billikens will receive their 2009 Atlantic 10 Conference championship rings.

SLU junior keeper Nick Shackelford made two saves to record his first career shutout, while South Florida's Jeff Attinella also made two saves. The Billikens outshot the Bulls 11-7 and held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

"To date I think it's the best we played," Billiken head coach Mike McGinty said. "A number of guys stepped up and really responded well. We left New Mexico with a bad taste in our mouth, but tonight we had good reactions, good attitudes and good mentalities. We need to keep it going in the right direction and get ready for an important home game against Oral Roberts next Friday."

Neither team had any real dangerous opportunities in the first half. Alex Sweetin recorded the first shot on goal when he sent a ball in from distance that Attinella handled easily. Later in the half, USF's Ben Sweat unleashed a shot to the near post from a bad angle that Shackelford defended.

Shackelford was tested again early in the second half when Bernardo Anor made a run up the left side, but Shackelford corralled the low shot to keep it a scoreless game.

Benny Estes appeared to put the Billikens on the board in the 73rd minute after burying a long cross from Christian Briggs, but the play was whistled offside.

SLU applied constant pressure late in the match and had a several opportunities to win it in regulation. Sweetin had a pair of chances go high of the frame, and Adnan Gabeljic sent a ball high in the final three minutes.

In the first extra session, USF had a chance from Aubrey Perry go high. In the second OT, Fernando Gonzalez shot to the far post, just missing the mark as well as the head of a USF attacker going for the deflection. SLU freshman Jon Roeckle blasted a long shot that went just high of the crossbar as both teams were looking for the game-winning goal late.
