ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis freshman forward Dwayne Evans recorded a double-double with career highs of 16 points and 14 rebounds as the Billikens topped Saint Joseph's 67-51 Saturday afternoon in Atlantic 10 Conference men's basketball action at Chaifetz Arena.
The win moves the Billikens to 6-11 overall and 1-3 in the A-10, while Saint Joseph's falls to 5-12, 0-4 in the league.
Evans finished 6-of-11 from the field and 4-of-5 from the charity strip. Six of his 14 boards were on the offensive glass. It was Evans' second double-double of the year.
Sophomore forward Cory Remekun finished one point off his career high with 12 points, while junior guard Kyle Cassity also chipped in 12 points. Junior forward Brian Conklin scored nine points and corralled seven boards, while freshman guard Mike McCall scored nine points on 3-for-3 shooting from 3-point range.
The Billikens committed just five turnovers, a season low, and posted a season-best 42 rebounds (18 offensive).
The score was tied 9-9 early on before the Bills gained a lead it would not relinquish after McCall and sophomore forward Cody Ellis drained a pair of treys, giving the Billikens a 15-9 advantage with 13:31 to go in the first half.
Later, freshman forward Rob Loe and Remekun converted two straight baskets to put the Billikens up by seven, 20-13 with 7:21 left in the first half. SLU saw its lead reach double digits for the first time at the 4:24 mark of the first half when Evans converted a conventional 3-point play to make it 25-15. The Billikens led 29-19 at halftime.
The Billikens maintained a double-digit lead for the better part of the second half. A Cassity trey four minutes into the second session made it 35-24 Billikens. An Ellis dunk and three-straight points by Remekun stretched the Billiken lead to 14 with 14:17 left.
McCall hit a 3-pointer with 9:13 left to give the Bills a 15-point lead at 53-38, their largest lead of the game to that point. Two Conklin free throws and another McCall trey again gave the Bills leads of 15 points in the final 10 minutes, and Remekun converted two free throws in the waning seconds to hand the Bills the 16-point victory.
Saint Louis continues A-10 play this Wednesday, Jan. 19, against Fordham. The game will be played at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. (CT). The Bills are next at home Wednesday, Jan. 26, when they welcome Rhode Island to Chaifetz Arena for an 8 p.m. tip.
