BRONX, N.Y. - Saint Louis' Jon Roeckle and William Hidalgo registered second-half tallies to vault the Billikens to a key 2-1 Atlantic 10 Conference men's soccer victory over Fordham Friday night.
The win, SLU's third in a row, improves its record to 5-7-1 overall and 3-2 in the A-10. The Billikens face La Salle Sunday in Philadelphia. Kickoff is slated for noon (CT). Fordham dips to 7-6-1 and 3-2 in the league.
After an evenly played first stanza, Roeckle got the Billikens on the board just 37 seconds into the second half, his first goal of the season. Robbie Kristo, the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week, sent a ball into the box that Roeckle gathered and buried to put the Billikens up 1-0.
Hidalgo registered his second goal of the year, the eventual game winner, in the 52nd minute. Kristo again started the scoring play, this time sending a ball into the box from the right side. Hidalgo got on the end of it and sent it far post to give the Bills a 2-0 advantage.
Fordham cut into its deficit with a goal by Jack-Tim Murphy at 72:33, but the Billikens hung on for the 2-1 victory.
SLU keeper Nick Shackelford was sharp in goal, making seven saves. The Billikens' defensive unit fought off seven corner kicks and nine second-half shots by the Rams.
