LOUIS - Freshman Abbey Stock (Town & County, Mo./St. Joseph's) headed in a
corner kick in the third minute, and Saint Louis made it stand up for a 1-0
Atlantic 10 Conference victory over Rhode Island Friday night at Robert R.
Hermann Stadium.
Sophomore Jenny Hummert (Wildwood, Mo./St. Joseph's) collected her
team-leading third assist of the season with a perfectly flighted ball. Stock
directed the pass into the back of the net from six yards away at the 2:14 mark
for her team-leading fourth tally of the year.
The victory gave the Billikens
(4-5-2, 2-0-0) their first 2-0 start in conference play since 2007. Rhode
Island fell to 5-6-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the A-10.
Junior goalkeeper Katie Walsh (Chesterfield,
Mo./Whitfield) made three saves and registered her fourth shutout of the
season. Walsh received help from her teammates on two occasions, as junior Maggie Baumann (Wildwood, Mo./St.
Joseph's) cleared a ball off the goal line in the 19th minute following a Rhode
Island corner kick, and freshman Mary
Wright (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) made another defensive save in
the 77th minute.
Reilly Lindsay made three
saves for Rhode Island, which fell to 0-5 against the Billikens in games played
at Hermann Stadium. SLU now leads the series 6-2.
The Rams earned a 13-11
advantage in shots, led by Ashley Evangelista's game-high four (three on goal).
Stock and Wright led the Billikens with three shots apiece, with all three of
Stock's attempts on frame.
Saint Louis concludes its
three-game homestand Sunday, Oct. 9, with a 1 p.m. A-10 contest against
Massachusetts.
