ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis freshman guard Mike McCall led four Billikens in double figures with 17 points as SLU upended Massachusetts 69-53 Wednesday night in Atlantic 10 Conference men's basketball action at Chaifetz Arena.

The Billikens move to 8-13 overall and 3-5 in the A-10, while UMass dips to 13-8, 5-3 in the league.

McCall's 17 points came on 5-of-12 shooting from the field, 2-of-7 from long range and 5-of-6 from the line. He also dished out a team-best six assists. Kyle Cassity scored 11 points on three 3-pointers and a pair of free throws, while Cody Ellis and Rob Loe chipped in 10 points apiece. Cory Remekun picked up five points and a team-high six rebounds.

The Billikens committed just seven turnovers and recorded 17 assists. The SLU defense forced 13 UMass turnovers, which it turned into 16 points.

The Billikens went on top 8-2 early on after Cassity and Loe buried 3-pointers. Two straight buckets by Dwayne Evans pushed the Billiken lead to 12-6 with 14:51 remaining in the first half.

UMass trimmed its deficit to four at 14-10 before the Billikens went on a 7-0 run, sparked by a pair of 3-pointers by McCall. Cassity then nailed two triples from the same spot at the top of the key and the Billikens led 27-14 with 6:55 to go.

McCall finished the scoring for the Billikens in the opening half with a runner off an Ellis steal, and SLU carried a 29-21 lead into the break.

A Loe trey and McCall runner gave the Billikens a nine-point lead early in the second half, but UMass scored five straight to pull within four and force a Billiken timeout.

Out of that break, SLU went on a 9-0 run. Remekun ignited the spurt with a traditional 3-point play, and Ellis nailed back-to-back treys to give the Billikens a 43-30 lead with 14:40 left in the game.

The Billiken lead would not slip below 10 from that point on. An Ellis triple and McCall layin made it 55-38 with 10:58 to go, and the Billikens made their free throws down the stretch to coast to the 16-point victory.

The Billikens return to action Saturday, Feb. 5, when they travel to Cincinnati to face Xavier at 10 a.m. (CT). The game will be televised on ESPNU.
