TAMPA, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast's Franceso DiStefano scored in the 80th minute to lift the Eagles to a 1-0 men's soccer victory over Saint Louis Sunday afternoon at USF Stadium.
"Overall we played okay," SLU head coach Mike McGinty said. "Our passing wasn't as clean as it needed to be, so we gave the ball away a little too easily. We had several quality chances that we should have converted. Florida Gulf Coast is a tricky team, at the bare minimum we needed to find a way to at least get a draw. It is a tough one to swallow, but we look forward to getting back in front of our fans at Hermann Stadium for Homecoming next Saturday."
The game was scoreless until DiStefano put one past SLU keeper Nick Shackelford at 79:51. William Morse and Josey Portillo assisted on the game winner.
The Billikens held a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Senior Mike Roach put a game-high two shots on frame. The Billiken defense held FGCU to just one shot on goal in each half.
Saint Louis (2-4) hosts Missouri State next Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. kick at Hermann Stadium. There will be a fireworks display at halftime as part of the traditional Homecoming festivities.
Florida Gulf Coast, the reigning Atlantic Sun regular-season champions, improved to 2-2-2 with the victory.
