ST. LOUIS - Dwayne Evans recorded his second double-double of the season, and Saint Louis held George Washington to 21 second-half points in a 78-56 Atlantic 10 Conference victory for the Billikens Saturday night at Chaifetz Arena.
The win halted a two-game losing skid and boosted the Billikens to 13-3 overall and 1-1 in the A-10. George Washington fell to 5-10, 0-2 with its ninth loss in 10 games.
Evans scored a season-high and game-high 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting, and his game-high 11 rebounds included seven on the offensive glass. The double-double was the seventh of his career.
Kwamain Mitchell was 6-of-9 from the field and scored 15 points, while Rob Loe (5-of-9) netted 11 points and grabbed a season-high six rebounds. Jordair Jett scored 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while Brian Conklin collected seven rebounds (four offensive).
David Pellom led George Washington with 15 points, while Tony Taylor tossed in 13.
The Billikens shot 50 percent (30-of-60) overall and 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from 3-point range. SLU earned a 38-24 advantage on the boards, including a season-high 16 offensive rebounds that led to 17 second-chance points to just two for GW.
Leading 44-39 early in the second half, the Billikens established command with a 15-3 run. Evans sparked the run with a tip-in, Mike McCall Jr. made a steal and a layup, and Mitchell drove for a layup that gave SLU its first double-digit lead, 50-39.
After Pellom briefly slowed the Bills' momentum with a three-point play, Evans sank a free throw and McCall drained a 3-pointer from the left wing to give Saint Louis a permanent double-digit margin, 54-42.
Two Conklin free throws and a Cody Ellis trey from the top of the key punctuated the run and put SLU in front 59-42. GW drew no closer than 13 the rest of the way.
The first half featured 12 lead changes. Mitchell scored five points and Conklin tallied four in a 12-4 run that gave the Billikens a 31-24 advantage with 8:00 to play, but George Washington answered with an 8-0 spurt to take a 32-31 edge with 5:07 remaining.
However, Saint Louis finished the half with an 11-3 flurry to lead 42-35 at the break. Mitchell ignited the run with a three-point play, McCall sank two free throws and Evans finished the spurt with three consecutive buckets.
The Billikens host Temple Wednesday, Jan. 11. Tip time at Chaifetz Arena is 8 p.m.
