KINGSTON, R.I. -Â Rhode Island's Billy Baron hit a jumper with 4.5 seconds remaining to cap a URI comeback and give the Rams a 64-62 victory over Saint Louis Saturday afternoon in Atlantic 10 Conference men's basketball action at the Ryan Center.
The loss halts the Billikens' (22-6, 10-4 A-10) six-game winning streak. Rhode Island improves to 6-23 and 3-11 in the league with the victory.
Saint Louis never trailed until Baron's last-second jumper. With the game tied 62-62, Rhode Island had possession and called timeout with 16 seconds remaining. Baron pulled up from mid-range length on the left elbow for the game-winning bucket. A potential game-tying Mike McCall Jr. running jumper as time expired was off the mark.
Sophomore forward Dwayne Evans posted team highs of 14 points and 12 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. Kwamain Mitchell registered 12 points, while Brian Conklin and Cody Ellis posted 10 apiece. McCall tallied nine points on three treys.
Orion Outerbridge led URI with a game-high 18 points.
The Billikens got off to a fast start, opening up a 10-2 lead on a Rob Loe trey, Conklin layin, Evans layin and a McCall triple that forced a URI timeout.
SLU remained hot from long range early, as an Ellis 3-pointer made it 15-4 Billikens. The Rams would put together a rally, however, and pulled within three at 17-14 with 11:23 left in the opening half.
A Conklin basket and Ellis trey sparked an 11-1 spurt that put SLU on top 28-15. The lead remained in double digits at 3:51 when Kwamain Mitchell buried a 3-pointer to make it 31-21. The teams traded baskets down the stretch, and Saint Louis entered halftime with a six-point cushion.
It was much of the same in the second half - SLU was able to string together rallies to keep a lead throughout, but the Rams would not go away. A McCall trey at the 11:28 mark of the second half gave SLU a 53-43 lead, but Rhode Island went on an 8-0 run to get back into the contest.
Rhode Island tied it for the first time with 4:21 remaining, but Ellis drained a triple on the other end, was fouled and completed the four-point play to put SLU up by four. The teams then traded baskets, bringing it to 62-62 and setting up Baron's last-minute bucket.
The Billikens return to action Tuesday, Feb. 28, against Xavier at Chaifetz Arena. Game time is slated for 8 p.m. The matchup will be televised nationally on the CBS Sports Network.
