Box Score EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Saint Louis scored twice in
21 seconds late in the second half and registered its first victory of the
season, a 2-0 triumph over Evansville Friday afternoon at McCutchan Stadium.
Freshman
midfielder Jamie Borges (Woodridge, Ill./Benet) gave the Billikens a 1-0 lead with her
first career goal, unassisted, at the 72:08 mark. Borges collected a loose ball
and beat Evansville goalkeeper Chaviel Harrison.
Junior forward Jenny
Hummert
(Wildwood, Mo./St. Joseph's) doubled the Saint Louis lead at 72:29 with her
first goal of the season. Hummert took a short pass from senior midfielder Alli
Reimer (St.
Charles, Mo./Duchesne) on a free kick and banged a shot past Harrison.
The Billikens
(1-1-1) dominated the action, especially in the second half. SLU's 22-8
advantage in shots included a 14-4 edge after the break. The Bills put 12 shots
on frame to four for Evansville (0-2).
Hummert led the
way with four shots, including three on goal. Junior forward Maddie Gebauer (Cedar Hill, Mo./St.
Joseph's) and freshman midfielder Katelyn Hammarlund (Arlington Heights, Ill./St.
Viator) each tallied three total shots and two shots on goal, while sophomore
forward Lindsay Elking (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline) launched three shots.
Senior
goalkeeper Katie Walsh (Chesterfield, Mo./Whitfield) made three saves to chalk up her
second consecutive shutout and 16th of her career. Harrison made 10 saves for
the Purple Aces.
"Our team did
well tonight, and it was nice to get our first victory on the road, especially
a shutout," head coach Kat Mertz said. "We put some things together in the first half,
but Evansville came out strong and made it tough for us to break them down
defensively. Then in the second half we really went after them in the attacking
third.
"We got a great
performance tonight by Maddie Gebauer," Mertz said, "and Alli Reimer did a
fantastic job and showed leadership in the midfield. Now we're ready to come
home and play our first game at Hermann Stadium against Marquette."
The
Billikens host nationally ranked Marquette Sunday, Aug. 26, at Hermann Stadium.
First whistle is at 5:30 p.m. There will be two men's games in the Billiken
Classic beginning at noon, and one ticket is good for all three contests.
