PITTSBURGH - Cody Ellis scored a team-high 16 points to help Saint Louis to a 73-64 victory over Duquesne in Atlantic 10 Conference men's basketball action Wednesday night at the Palumbo Center.
The win, SLU's first on the road this season, improves its record to 13-5 overall and 2-2 in A-10 play. The Dukes dip to 7-12 overall and 0-5 in the league.
Ellis hit 11-of-12 free throws to help account for his 16 points. Dwayne Evans (14 points), Kwamain Mitchell (11 points) and Jordair Jett (10 points) also scored in double digits for the Billikens, who overcame a 3-for-21 shooting performance from 3-point range to grind out the win.
SLU earned a 40-36 edge on the glass and was led by Grandy Glaze, who pulled down a career best 11 rebounds. Glaze, making his first start since early in the year, also registered career highs in points (eight) and steals (two).
In a game that saw 11 ties and 17 lead changes, it wasn't until the final three minutes that the Billikens took control. Up by just three with three minutes left, SLU went on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a Jett trey. The Billikens hit their free throws down the stretch to build their lead to 13 with a little more than a minute to play, and SLU hung on for the victory.
As a team, the Billikens shot 37.5 percent (21-of-56) from the field and 71.8 percent (28-of-39) from the line. Mitchell dished out a team-best six assists and tallied two steals. Evans pulled down five rebounds.
Saint Louis returns to action Saturday, Jan. 26, when it faces St. Bonaventure in Olean, N.Y. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. (CT), and it will be televised on FOX Sports Midwest.
