RICHMOND, Va. - Dwayne Evans registered his second-straight double-double, and Saint Louis held Richmond to just 23.3 percent shooting from the floor in a 56-46 Billiken win at Richmond Saturday at the Robins Center.
The win, SLU's sixth in a row, improves its record to 18-5 overall and 7-2 in conference play. The Billikens keep pace with Butler, which won at George Washington earlier Saturday, to remain tied for first in the conference standings. VCU, also tied for first entering Saturday's action, plays Saturday night. Richmond, which suffered just its second home defeat of the season (now 12-2 at Robins Center), dips to 14-10 overall and 4-5 in the league.
Evans scored 11 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, both team highs, for his second double-double in as many games. Kwamain Mitchell, Jordair Jett and Cody Ellis all scored nine points for the Billikens.
Richmond managed just 10 field goals on 43 opportunities. The 23.3 percent shooting mark was the lowest yielded by the Billikens this season, bettering the 31.8 percent mark by New Mexico on Dec. 31.
SLU was able to overcome a season-high 20 turnovers in the win.
Richmond received a game-high 20 points from Cedrick Lindsay. Alonzo Nelson-Adoda recorded six blocks.
The Billikens jumped out to a 9-2 lead six minutes in before Richmond found its way back into the game. The Spiders briefly took the lead on three different occasions in the first half before a key 3-pointer late in the half by Mitchell gave SLU a four-point advantage (23-19) at the break.
SLU seemed to take command midway through the second half when the Billikens went on a 13-2 run, but the Spiders responded with a 13-1 spurt to keep the game close.
But SLU hit its free throws late -Â Evans, Ellis, Jordair Jett and Mitchell all chipping in -Â to maintain the lead and pull out the eventual 10-point victory.
Saint Louis has a midweek bye and returns to action Saturday, Feb. 16, against Charlotte at 6 p.m. That game will be televised on FOX Sports Midwest.
