Billikens Edged by Louisville in NCAA Second Round, 2-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Tim Kubel's goal with 3:43 remaining gave No. 13 Louisville a 2-1 win over No. 19 Saint Louis Sunday night in an NCAA Men's Soccer Championship second-round game at Lynn Stadium.

With the win, Louisville (11-7-3) advances to the round of 16 to face UMBC next Sunday. Saint Louis finishes with a 14-5-2 record.

Kubel's shot, taken from the left of Saint Louis keeper Sascha Otte, was deflected by Otte. However, the ball continued toward the goal and found its way past the line for Kubel's team-leading seventh goal of the season.

The Billikens took a 1-0 lead at the 67:26 mark. Filip Pavisic's shot off a corner-kick serve was stopped by Louisville keeper Joachim Bell, but Francisco Vizcaino's header on the rebound found its way inside the left post for Vizcaino's first goal of the season. Pavisic collected his third assist of the year.

Louisville tied it at 70:15. Andrew Brody took Kubel's pass from the right side and finished from close range for his third goal of the season.

Otte made two challenging saves in the first half. He came out to meet Ben Strong on a breakaway and made a point-blank stop in the 16th minute. Five minutes later, he knocked away a line drive from his right off the foot of Ricardo Velazco.

Louisville finished the game with a 10-6 advantage in shots, while Saint Louis earned a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Otte tallied five saves, and Ball recorded three.

"It would have been nice to have more chances, but part of that was Louisville being good with the ball and not turning it over," SLU head coach Mike McGinty said.

"I thought we started the game, in the first 20 minutes, pretty lively," McGinty said. "We created a few more chances in the first half. I think as the game went on, we kind of ran out of gas. We had a couple of guys go down with injuries, so it was tough by the end of the game."
