Billikens Fall Despite Yarbrough's Career Night

ST. LOUIS – Milik Yarbrough posted career scoring and rebounding highs, but South Dakota State finished the game with a 14-2 run and defeated Saint Louis 62-55 Tuesday night at Chaifetz Arena.

Yarbrough tied for game-high scoring honors with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting. His nine rebounds led all players.

Austin Gillman scored seven points, and John Manning tossed in six while grabbing a career-high six rebounds.

Reed Tellinghuisen was 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and netted a career-high 15 points for South Dakota State (5-3). Deondre Parks scored 14 points, Zach Horstman had 12, and Jake Bittle was 3-of-3 from 3-point range for nine points. Parks collected team highs of six rebounds and six assists.

The Jackrabbits of the Summit League shot 51 percent (21-of-41) overall and 62 percent (8-of-13) from distance. Meanwhile, the Billikens were just 19-of-57 (33 percent) overall and 2-of-19 (11 percent) from beyond the arc.

Trailing by one at halftime, Saint Louis (5-4) scored on its first four second-half possessions. Austin McBroom hit from the left wing, Manning connected on two free throws and a second-chance layup, and Tanner Lancona made a layup for a 32-25 Billiken lead.

SLU fought off several South Dakota State challenges and continued to hold the upper hand throughout most of the second half. Although they didn't expand the margin to more than seven, the Billikens still led 53-48 following Yarbrough's spinning layup at the 3:27 mark.

Parks began SDSU's decisive run – which saw the Jackrabbits score on their final seven possessions – with two free throws. Connor Devine followed with a tip-in, and Parks' driving layup gave the visitors a 54-53 lead.

Yarbrough's backdoor layup with 1:36 remaining put Saint Louis back in front, but those were the last points the Billikens would score. Horstman responded with a drive down the lane that gave South Dakota State the lead for good, and Parks' three-point play made it 59-55. Three free throws sealed the win for the Jackrabbits.

After Lancona's layup gave Saint Louis a 10-9 edge – the sixth lead change in the early going – two 3-pointers fueled a 10-0 South Dakota State run that put the Jackrabbits on top 19-10.

The Billikens responded with a 14-2 spurt of their own, sparked by a Marcus Bartley trey. Agbeko sank three free throws, and Yarbrough's putback of an offensive rebound sliced the SDSU lead to 19-18.

A dunk by Larson momentarily slowed SLU's momentum, but the Bills concluded their run with another Yarbrough putback, two Yarbrough free throws and Mike Crawford's baseline jumper for a 24-21 advantage.

South Dakota State tallied the last four points of the first half to take a 25-24 lead to the locker room.

The Billikens return to action at Chaifetz Arena Saturday, Dec. 13, hosting SIUE. Tip time is 6 p.m.
