Box Score AMES, Iowa – Tori Marshall's goal in the 77th minute gave Saint Louis a chance, but the Billikens could not come up with an equalizer and fell 2-1 to Iowa State Sunday afternoon at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
SLU saw its winning streak halted at two and slipped to 2-2, while Iowa State of the Big 12 Conference improved to 2-2.
Iowa State had the upper hand in the first half, outshooting SLU 8-2 and earning a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Koree Willer, assisted by Adalie Schmidt, scored her third goal of the season at 25:37 to put the Cyclones on top 1-0.
The Billikens were much more active in the final third following intermission, posting a 7-4 edge in total shots and earning three corners. However, Schmidt and Willer teamed up again – this time with Schmidt notching her third goal aided by a Willer assist – to make it 2-0 Iowa State at 71:01.
Marshall, whose first collegiate goal was the game winner in Friday night's 2-1 victory at Drake, cut the ISU lead in half at 76:23. She took a feed from Lindsay Elking, who collected her first assist of the year, and connected on a header from four yards out. However, the Billikens were kept at bay the rest of the game by the Iowa State defense.
Hanna Benben made four saves for the Billikens, who welcome Western Illinois to Robert R. Hermann Stadium for their home opener Friday, Sept. 5. Game time is 7 p.m.
