ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis University basketball greats Erwin Claggett and Arlene (Lampe) Torre are the Billiken honorees for the Atlantic 10 Conference's Legends Class of 2015.
“Arlene and Erwin had wonderful basketball careers, and to this day still exemplify what it means to be a Billiken,” SLU Director of Athletics Chris May said. “They are as highly accomplished and respected off the court as they were on it, and we could not be more thrilled to recognize them at the women's and men's A-10 Basketball Championships in March.”
The Women's Basketball Legends will be saluted with a breakfast on Friday, March 6, prior to the 2015 A-10 Women's Basketball Championship quarterfinals. The Men's Basketball Legends will be honored on Saturday, March 14, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., prior to the 2015 Men's Basketball Championship semifinals.
Claggett played for the Billikens from 1991-95 and is the second-leading scorer in SLU history with 1,910 points. He is the Billikens' all-time leader in 3-pointers made (295) and attempted (716), and he is third all time in 3-point field goal percentage (.412). Additionally, Claggett is seventh all time in steals (145) and ninth in assists (347).
Playing at the height of the SpoonBall era under legendary head coach Charlie Spoonhour, Claggett helped lead the Billikens to their first NCAA appearance in several decades. A native of Venice, Ill., he is the boys' high school basketball coach at St. Louis University High School.
Torre played at SLU from 1982-86 and holds SLU career records for total rebounds (1,000), rebounding average (10.5 rpg), field goal percentage (.552) and blocked shots (217). She is the only Billiken women's basketball player with at least 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds.
Torre, who is an assistant vice president at TheBANK of Edwardsville, was a CoSIDA second-team Academic All-American in her senior year. She was inducted into the Saint Louis University Billiken Hall of Fame in 1994.
