Billikens Battle No. 16 VCU to the Wire

ST. LOUIS – Treveon Graham's layup with 0.9 seconds left gave No. 16 VCU a 63-61 Atlantic 10 Conference victory over Saint Louis Friday night at Chaifetz Arena.

Milik Yarbrough scored 13 of his team-high 15 points in the second half for the Billikens and tied for team-high honors with six rebounds, helping SLU (9-10, 1-5 A-10) earn a 36-29 advantage on the glass.

Austin McBroom tallied 12 points, while Ash Yacoubou posted nine points and six rebounds. Marcus Bartley had eight points and a career- and game-high seven assists, and Davell Roby chipped in eight points.

Graham netted a game-high 21 points for VCU (16-3, 6-0), which extended its winning streak to 11. He was joined in double figures by Briante Weber, who scored 15.

Saint Louis took a 60-58 lead with 40 seconds left on McBroom's running 8-footer that capped a 10-2 Billiken run. On the ensuing VCU possession, Jordan Burgess drilled a 3-pointer from the right corner that gave the Rams (16-3, 6-0) a 61-60 lead.

McBroom missed a jumper that would have put SLU on top, but Burgess fouled Yacoubou on the rebound with 7.3 seconds to play. Yacoubou sank one of two from the stripe to tie it at 61.

Graham then took the inbounds pass in the backcourt and drove all the way to the basket for the game-winning shot.

After VCU took an early 9-6 lead, Saint Louis pulled even on a Bartley 3-pointer and took an 11-9 edge on McBroom's jumper. Following a free throw by Yacoubou, Weber hit from beyond the arc to tie it at 12.

Two Reggie Agbeko buckets gave the Billikens a 16-12 advantage, and then the teams traded runs.

VCU got five points apiece from Graham and Terry Larrier in a 12-0 outburst that put the Rams on top 24-16.

SLU answered with a 16-4 spurt. Agbeko sparked the run with a 1-hander in the lane, McBroom and Austin Gillmann followed with 3-pointers, and McBroom drove for a layup that made it 26-all. Roby's drive pushed the Billikens in front, 28-26.

After Jarred Guest tied it for VCU, layups by Yacoubou and Roby allowed Saint Louis to match its largest first-half lead, 32-28. VCU regained the upper hand on six straight points from Graham, but a Yarbrough layup provided a 34-34 deadlock at intermission.

There were four lead changes and two ties early in the second half. The Billikens took a 43-40 lead when Bartley converted all three free throws after being fouled on an attempt from beyond the arc. VCU scored the next seven points for a 47-43 lead.

Yarbrough's three-point play cut the lead to a point, but VCU seemed to take command with a 9-4 run that put the Rams on top 56-50 with 4:23 remaining. However, Saint Louis scored on six straight possessions in a 10-2 run that resulted in a 60-58 lead.

The Billikens are back in action Thursday, Jan. 29, at George Mason.
