ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis held Dayton to its season scoring low, but the Flyers outscored the Billikens 10-0 over the last four minutes and escaped Chaifetz Arena with a 51-44 Atlantic 10 Conference victory Tuesday night.
Dayton improved to 18-5 overall and 8-3 in the A-10. Saint Louis slipped to 10-14, 2-9.
Ash Yacoubou tallied 12 points and added five rebounds, including a career-high four on the offensive glass. Davell Roby pulled down a career-high seven rebounds, while Milik Yarbrough grabbed six boards to help Saint Louis gain a 36-33 rebounding advantage.
Dayton's Darrell Davis scored 12 points off the bench to tie Yacoubou for game-high honors. Davis canned four of the Flyers' six 3-pointers, going 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.
Kendall Pollard had 11 points and 10 rebounds, Dyshawn Pierre gathered a game-high 11 rebounds, and Scoochie Smith registered a game-high five steals.
Saint Louis led by six points at intermission and held a 31-26 advantage following two Yacoubou free throws with 14:29 remaining. Smith buried a trey and Pierre made a layup to forge a 31-31 deadlock.
Four lead changes and two ties ensued before the Bills regained the upper hand, 42-41, on Reggie Agbeko's offensive rebound and put-back. Mike Crawford's right-wing jumper off the glass as the shot clock expired boosted the lead to 44-41 at the 4:01 mark.
Unfortunately, those were the last points the Billikens would score. Dayton immediately drew to within a point on two Pollard free throws and, on its next possession, took the lead for good on Davis' last 3-pointer of the game. A 5-of-6 performance from the foul line in the final 1:23 secured the win.
While Dayton alternated missed shots and turnovers on its first four possessions of the game, Saint Louis used a Marcus Bartley 3-pointer and Yarbrough's short one-hander to grab a 5-0 lead.
The Flyers then put together a 15-6 run – scoring on seven of nine possessions, with points coming from six different players – to take a 15-11 lead with 10:53 left.
But SLU held Dayton to just one field goal and two free throws during a 14-4 spurt that gave the Bills a 25-19 halftime advantage. Four different Billikens scored during the run, with Yacoubou and Roby chalking up six and four points, respectively.
Up next for the Billikens is a road test against Rhode Island Saturday, Feb. 14. Tip time is 1 p.m. (CT).
