The Basics
Saint Louis freshman Saadiq Mohammed scored in the ninth minute and the Billikens held on for a 1-0 win over Rhode Island in Atlantic 10 Conference men's soccer action Wednesday night at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
The Billikens have won three in a row and improve to 4-4-3 overall and 3-0-0 in the league. SLU, which moves into first place in the league standings, is the lone A-10 school remaining with an unblemished record. Rhode Island falls to 4-9-1 overall and 1-3 in the A-10.
Mohammed scored the only goal the Billikens would need in the ninth minute, his second goal in as many games. Duncan Corbett unleashed a shot from the right side that was saved by URI keeper Nils Leifhelm. The rebound deflected into the middle of the box, and a sliding Mohammed buried the ball into the back of the net. It was the second goal of Mohammed's career and Corbett's first-career assist.
For the second game in a row, sophomore goalkeeper Ben Yeager was sharp for the Billikens. He made six saves for his second-straight shutout.
A player from each side was issued red cards late in the match. For SLU, Corbett was shown the exit in the 83rd minute. Rhode Island's Liam Daley was issued the red as time expired.
