MASON, Ohio – The fourth-seeded Saint Louis women's tennis team gained a spot in the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship semifinals with its school-record 20th victory, a 4-1 quarterfinals triumph over fifth-seeded Richmond Friday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
The Billikens (20-4) broke the previous school mark of 19 wins set in 1979-80. They will meet No. 1 seed and three-time defending champion VCU Saturday at 9 a.m. (CT). The Rams blanked ninth-seeded Dayton 4-0 Friday after receiving a first-round bye.
SLU took a 1-0 lead by capturing the doubles point. Aspen Cervin and Madison Cook defeated Gaby Rosales and Ana Ramirez 6-2 at No. 2, while Eleonore Tchakarova and Verginie Tchakarova downed Brittany Boys and Katya Salas 6-4 at No. 1 to clinch the point.
The Billikens were on top 3-0 following the completion of Nos. 2 and 3 singles. Eleonore Tchakarova beat Rosales 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2, followed by Verginie Tchakarova's 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 win over Boys at No. 3.
Richmond (13-10) claimed its only point when Ramirez edged Cook 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4. However, Cervin closed out the match by coming from behind to topple Abadias 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1.
