HOUSTON – Saint Louis received a team-high 17 points from Javon Bess and a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds from Jordan Goodwin, but Houston ended the game on an 8-1 run to post a 68-64 victory over Saint Louis at the Fertitta Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Bills fall to 7-3 with the loss, while Houston remains unbeaten at 10-0.
Bess, who was coming off a career-high 24 points against Oregon State in SLU's last outing, was 6-of-15 from the field, including three treys.
Goodwin registered his first double-double of the season. Tramaine Isabell Jr. scored 16 points, while Carte'Are Gordon scored eight points including a big second-half 3-pointer.
Saint Louis led by as many six points early in the second half and had a 63-60 lead with less than two minutes to play but were unable to hang on. Houston's Corey Davis Jr., who scored a game-high 17 points, nailed a triple from the corner with 29 seconds left for the eventual game-winning bucket.
The Cougars, who extend their home winning streak to 23, jumped out to a nine-point first-half lead but SLU responded with a 15-2 run to take a 25-20 with 4:22 left in the first. Houston led 29-27 at the break.
The Billikens came out blazing in the second half. A Bess 3-pointer on the first possession sparked an 8-0 run and SLU led 35-29. But Houston quickly responded with a 9-0 rally of its own and regained the lead. The Cougars stretched their lead to as many as eight point midway through the second half before SLU rallied back for the three-point lead with less than two minutes to play, setting up the thrilling ending.
The Bills are back in action on Wednesday night when they host North Carolina Central at Chaifetz Arena. Game time is 7 p.m.
