THE BASICS
• Maya Taylor, Kennedy Cordia and Sien Gallop produced double-doubles to lead Saint Louis to a 3-2 (25-22, 24-26, 25-18, 17-25, 15-9) victory over Western Illinois in an exhibition match Tuesday night at Chaifetz Pavilion.
• Taylor collected a match-high 18 kills and added 13 digs; Cordia produced match highs of 14 digs and 51 assists; and Gallop chipped in 13 kills and 10 digs.
FIRST SET
Western Illinois led much of the way until a 5-0 Saint Louis run put the Billikens on top 16-14. The Leathernecks tied it at 19 and again at 20, but SLU scored five of the last seven points.
SECOND SET
The second frame featured 16 ties and six lead changes. Saint Louis led 22-21 following a 4-0 spurt, and the set was knotted at 22, 23 and 24 before Western Illinois tallied two consecutive points to even the match.
THIRD SET
Following six early ties, the Billikens used a 10-3 run to forge a 19-12 advantage. The Leathernecks drew no closer than five points the rest of the way.
FOURTH SET
WIU broke open a close contest down the stretch. The Leathernecks led by as many as nine points before settling for the final margin.
FIFTH SET
Cordia began the set on the service line and guided the Billikens to an 8-0 cushion. SLU maintained a lead of at least five points until the end.
NOTABLE
• Cordia led all players with five of SLU's 11 service aces.
• Sara Daniels and Isabelle Walsh recorded eight and seven kills, respectively.
• Jenny Backus turned in nine digs.
• Gallop, Lauren Mershon and Monica Loftus led the way at the net with three blocks apiece.
