Trio Powers Billikens Past Maryville, 82-69

Hargrove Jr. scores SLU season-high 27 points

ST. LOUISTerrence Hargrove Jr. scored a SLU season-high 27 points, Javonte Perkins poured in 22 and Jordan Goodwin recorded a sixth straight double-double to lead Saint Louis to an 82-69 victory over Maryville Tuesday night at Chaifetz Arena.
 
The Billikens improved to 9-2. The game was counted as an exhibition for NCAA Division II Maryville.
 
Hargrove was 9-of-16 from the floor and 9-of-12 from the free throw line as the Billikens shot a season-high 76.7 percent (23-of-30) from the stripe. He added seven rebounds and two blocks.
 
Perkins was 3-of-6 from 3-point range and 5-of-5 from the foul line. Goodwin (8-of-15 FG) tallied 18 points, grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds, tied his career high with six steals and matched his season best with six assists. Yuri Collins collected a game-high seven assists.
 
The Billikens committed a season-low seven turnovers while forcing 18 Maryville miscues. SLU took advantage by outscoring the Saints 21-4 in points off turnovers.
 
Parker Long (18), Jalen Gant (12) and Dezmond McDaniel (11) led the Maryville offensive effort. Ross Ryan narrowly missed a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.
 
Saint Louis led by seven at intermission but saw Maryville pull even with a 7-0 run to begin the second half.
 
A Perkins bucket put the Bills in front for good, 43-41. SLU gradually built the margin to 10 points, 59-49, with 12:22 remaining, only to see Maryville narrow the gap to 64-60 with 8:52 to play.
 
It was a five-point game, 72-67, with 2:37 left. But a Hargrove free throw, Perkins' layup and two by Collins from the stripe doubled the lead at the 1:24 mark, and the Billikens remained in command.
 
There were 10 ties and 15 lead changes in the first half. The final deadlock was 30-30 at the 4:30 mark, after which Saint Louis outscored Maryville 11-4 the rest of the way.
 
Hargrove tallied six of the 11 points, and a banked-in 3-pointer by Goodwin at the buzzer sent the Billikens to the locker room with a 41-34 advantage.
 
Up next for Saint Louis is Kansas State on Saturday, Dec. 21, at the Sprint Center in Kansas City. Tip time is 6 p.m. The game will be live streamed on ESPN+.
