RECAP
Ben Huels scored early in the second half to propel the Saint Louis Billikens to a 1-0 victory over the Davidson Wildcats Saturday in the Atlantic 10 Conference men's soccer opener for both teams.
The win, SLU's third in a row, improves its record to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the A-10. Davidson slips to 1-4-1 and 0-1 in the league.
The Billikens controlled the pace for much of the game and broke through in the 49th minute on a corner kick. Leo Novaes sent the ball in from the left side, and Huels ran onto it and headed it toward the left side of the frame the game's only goal.
The Saint Louis defense was solid throughout, as the Wildcats managed just two shots toward SLU keeper Patrick Schulte all night. Schulte earned his second consecutive shutout.
It was Huels' first goal of the season. Novaes now has at least one point in each of the last three games and leads SLU with six points (2G, 2A) on the year.
The Billikens return to action on Tuesday in a nonconference tilt at Memphis. Game time is 7 p.m.
