ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis University women's soccer has announced its 2021 spring schedule, a 14-game slate that includes a formidable group of non-conference opponents and eight Atlantic 10 Conference matches.
"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to play a meaningful spring season after more than 14 months away from outside competition," head coach
Katie Shields said. "Our women came back from the winter break prepared, fit, and hungry to compete at a high level.
"Associate head coach
Chris Allen did outstanding work putting together a challenging non-conference schedule to prepare us for A-10 play," Shields said. "Additionally, I want to thank Director of Athletics
Chris May, Deputy Director of Athletics
Dr. Janet Oberle and Associate Director of Athletics
Annie Reis. Their leadership and work put us in position to compete for and win the A-10 championship and return to the NCAA Tournament."
The Atlantic 10 will conduct conference play in three "pods" to minimize travel. Saint Louis is joined in its group by Dayton, Duquesne and St. Bonaventure; the Billikens face Dayton and Duquesne three times each and St. Bonaventure twice.
Conference home games for the Billikens are St. Bonaventure (March 14), Duquesne (March 21), Dayton (April 8) and Dayton (April 11). SLU is on the road vs. Dayton (March 18), St. Bonaventure (March 28), Duquesne (April 1) and Duquesne (April 4).
The Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Soccer Championship, reduced from the customary eight teams to four this year, will be held April 15-17 at a campus site to be determined.
Following a home exhibition game vs. McKendree Feb. 4, Saint Louis opens the season by hosting intrastate rival Kansas City Feb. 7. The Roos registered a 13-4-4 record in 2019.
Next is a neutral-site game in the Indianapolis suburb of Westfield, Indiana, vs. Xavier. The Musketeers posted a 17-4-2 mark, captured Big East Conference regular-season and tournament titles, and reached the NCAA Championship second round a season ago.
The Billikens welcome Missouri Valley Conference foes Southern Illinois and Illinois State to Hermann Stadium Feb. 17 and Feb. 20, respectively. Illinois State was the 2019 MVC regular-season and tournament runner-up while turning in a 14-6 record.
SLU's final two non-conference matches are against opponents who competed during the traditional fall season. On Feb. 28, the Bills travel to Arkansas (9-2), which won a second straight Southeastern Conference regular-season crown and earned a top-10 national ranking. Oklahoma State (6-2-1), which finished third in the Big 12 Conference, visits Midtown March 6.
